It runs on the pneumatic principle, so you connect it to an air pump and set it inside the tank. A biological filter ball sits at the bottom of the cylinder to support nitrifying bacteria, which drive the tank's nitrogen cycle. Because waste is contained in one place, it reduces the need for frequent water changes and gravel washing, and helps keep odors and contamination down.

Two things to know before you buy. The air pump is not included, so you will need one separately for the unit to work. And when the compartment fills with waste, you empty, disinfect, and rinse it before putting it back. The body is acrylic in gray and measures 16 x 9 x 9 cm.
